one of the books I've read recently... [Nov. 30th, 2009|02:10 am]

A Drifting Life A Drifting Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This manga artist's memoir no doubt appealed to me because I am a comics artist myself. I enjoyed the story of his young life for the things I could relate to, and also for his ambition, which I found inspiring.

Sexy Losers makes #9 in the top ten webcomics of the decade according to Webcomic Overlook. "Sexy Losers makes the list for being so audacious that in manages to get past the merely repulsive and reaches a strange (and uncomfortable) level that redefines “dark humor.”" In the comments, it's suggested that I should win the biggest douche award, and given how wrapped up I was in the drama that developed over the comic in the past, there's an argument that it is earned. Lesson learned, but the past is forever on the internet. As for the award itself, I am honored but I really don't think it deserves it. There are so many better comics out there, it's hard to imagine why anyone would remember the comic, let alone put it in a best 10 list.

Sexy Losers on TV Tropes. Most of the things here I am guilty as charged. The one I have the most contention with is "There Are No Therapists", as there IS a therapist -- Dr. Lovetalk. She appears in almost all the threads dispensing advice to the characters. Perhaps that should be changed to "There Are No Good Therapists" in line with her inability to make any bad situation any better.

#258 - "Chafed Dickens [2 of 5]"

The second part of the Chafed Dickens storyline, with Dr. Lovetalk as the ghost that shows Mike's origins. Next week: the ghost of the present attempts to show Mike why his present isn't all it can be.

I had a longer post thought up for this but unfortunately there are things happening in my life which aren't terribly pleasant. If things start to look up, I'll post something but for now I'm just updating the comic with what I have. I'm sorry.

An apartment house for mice, soon to be an - extraordinarily ugly! - apartment house for people. Better this way, I think.

#257 - "Chafed Dickens [1 of 5]"

It's getting into the Christmas season, so we better have some X-mas specials. Sexy Losers is no exception this year, and this week we kick off with the first part of the Chafed Dickens storyline. The ghost in this strip is none other than Matt, the original creator of the sex/politics newsblog Sensible Erection (www.sensibleerection.com) who has supported the strip throughout the years. Thanks, Matt! Next week: the ghost of the past shows Mike his origins!

I had this idea several years ago, but for some reason only now it's seeing the light. The reason probably is because at 5 strips, it's pretty demanding and needed more preparation than I was ever ready to do. I started it once years ago but I started late and knew it was impossible to finish it by Christmas and I abandoned it. It was only this year when I came across the technique for doing Christmas strips that I needed -- start in July. Doing the odd panel here and there really helped ensure that this Christmas I could make this series, and discarding the old artwork and coming up with a different finale kept it fresh. I hope you enjoy it.

It's both fortunate and unfortunate that Disney decided to come out with its own retelling this year of the Christmas Carol, even though this strip had other inspirations. It's fortunate that it makes the parody currently relevant, it's unfortunate that maybe it will be seen as a parody of that movie specifically, which it is not. This version is actually inspired by the WKRP in Cincinnati episode "Bah, Humbug" in which Arthur Carlson is visited by ghosts who get him to give Christmas bonuses in very much the same vein as the original telling of Christmas Carol. But what struck me about that particular parody was that it really didn't play with the conventions -- just adapted them to fit the episode. I always thought that was unfortunate as the story needed to be parodied in a way that pokes fun at the original rather than simply pay homage to it.

Coffee Troll, originally uploaded by davidlasky.

I'm proud to announce that my collaboration with a very talented young writer is now being previewed on an exciting new site.
You can sample about half of the story right here:

http://www.astorybeforebed.com/books/29-the-northwest-mythical-and-unknown-creatures-organization-meeting-66-by-noah-sather-and-david-lasky

A Story Before Bed is designed to allow parent, grandparents, or whomever to read stories to kids who live far away.

Noah, the author, by coincidence was also a student in my comics classes at 826 Seattle. We have volunteered our services on this project to benefit 826 Seattle, a non-profit that provides free writing classes and tutoring to young people.
