With rumors flying that the Connie Willis will be visiting the Hugo House later this year, I had to pick up her Hugo award-winning novel, To Say Nothing of the Dog. Those not familiar with sci-fi, the Hugo is *the* award to win. This novel is the sequel to her earlier Hugo award-winning novel, Doomsday Book. I should also point out that Connie Willis owns nine Hugos. So far.
The title of the book refers to another book, "Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)", a Victorian-age comedy. And thusly, this novel is a comedy. Nevertheless, it's also a bit of a mystery, a P&P romance with some head-scratching sci-fi conundrums. The story takes a while to get going. After the first few chapters, you're chugging along nicely with a sleep-deprived time-displaced historian stuck in Victorian England, clueless of manners and cuisine, trying to undo a time-travel paradox.
I don't want to spoil it anymore by saying too much. This is the kind of book like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - it takes time to get thru this book but it's worth it. And the ending is fantastic. |
